The European Parliament is located in Strasbourg and makes it one of the most powerful parliaments in the world.  Strasbourg has been home to the "unification of Europe" movement since 1949 when the Council of Europe was housed in this city. Historically this city has been the focus of intense national interests between France and Germany. As we learned in the WWII tour of the Colmar Gap, the Germans were willing to do almost anything to recapture Strasbourg as it would have been such an emotional blow to the French. The city is also beautiful - even in the rain!!
