On the way to the Rhine Gorge where Germany's many castles and vineyards are located we stopped in Mannheim for a bus trip to Heidelberg where I was stationed while serving in the Army. Home of the oldest university in Germany and founded by the Romans (the "street" to Darmstadt out of Heidelberg was built by Ceaser). <https://www.tripsavvy.com/heidelberg-city-guide-for-travelers-1519847>.
Once we sailed again we entered the famous Rhine Gorge and the equally famous Lorelei passage where the "siren" claimed the lives of so many boatmen navigating the Rhine. The vineyards cling to nearly verticle hillsides in places and the castles were there to claim "river taxes" to anyone carrying goods in ancient times. The following photos are showing the Rhine River ship traffic and the many sites as we cruised north to our next stop at Marksburg Castle. One can quickly understand just how important this river is to commerce. The Legend of the Lorelei is here: <https://magical-europe.com/2019/09/04/the-lorelei-loreley-a-siren-of-german-folklore/>.
