We left early from Breisach to drive up into the hills of the Black Forest. This region takes its name from the Roman Legions who marched and fought through this dense forest of evergreens. There were so many trees so close together that the light would become very dim during the day. As a result the Romans called this wooded region the Black Forest.

We travelled through Colmar to learn about the Battle of the Bulge South where the Germans tried to cross the Rhine and move north to retake Strassbourg. The Americans and French stopped them cold. This is also where Audie Murphy received the Medal of Honor while holding off 8 Panzers and 250 Mountain soldiers from attacking to the north. This shrine honoring him was not built until 2002! by the children of the children who survived this in the little town of Holzwihr, France.
