Where the Two Armies Met

The Bomb Shelter was just a few blocks from the hotel.  It was built along with two others (I think that’s right) during the Cold War when tensions were so high between America and the Soviet Union.  What is interesting is that they were never outfitted to last more than 14 days and even then, outfitting then required a minimum of two week’s notice!   Designed to hold 3,000 people each they were never going to actually work like the people thought they would.

This is the famous Trabant auto made in East Germany.  It was very expensive and could take up to 10 years before delivery!  It is in the entrance to the bunker museum.

Main hall when you enter deep underground.

Rows of bunkbeds on poles and hung from wall.  Not even close to the numbers needed.

There were two infirmaries in the shelter.  Each with only five beds and a tiny storage unit.   Can’t imagine the thinking here.

Four washrooms: two for each gender.  However, only 2.5 liters of water was allowed each person per day for everything!  Washing, drinking, cleaning, etc.

Men are simply not used to the long lines that would have transpired to get to a urinal.  Approximately 1500 males per 14 urinals.

The air filtration system.  Good for 14 days but no way to change filters.  You would have to exit the bunker after they ceased working.

Generator for 3000 people.  No fuel, part of that two week notice!

All that is left of the main church of Berlin.  It is a war memorial.
