Michael and Marilynn tour

The Great Lakes:

From Duluth to Toronto

Our tour at Thunder Bay turned out to be very rewarding.  Next to where our ship docked was a large wetland set aside just for birds and we discovered it while out walking waiting for our tour to Fort William and to Kakabeka Falls.

wetland

These birds we saw were all nesting Tree Swallows.

White pelicans and Double Crested Cormorants.

Fort William was built by the Northwest Trading Co. and was the center of the fur trade for many years and was rebuilt in its current site exactly the way it was created.  Voyageurs hunted in the forests and came here to trade.  Later we visited Kakabeka Falls. Fort William has a wonderful website:  <https://www.visitthunderbay.com/en/see-and-do/fort-william-historical-park.aspx>.

Our guide in Voyageur wear.

Small encampment of Anishinaabe First Nation people.

The recreation was done with only original building techniques and tools.  No modern equipment!

Voyageur tents where they would stay when here.

These three buildings are original from the first establishment of Fort William.

Pano of courtyard.

Canoe house where birch bark canoes are actually being made by the staff who some are Anishinaabe people.

Kakabeka Falls.  Special to the Anishinaabe people as a princess led an invasion of enemy first nation people over the falls to protect her tribe.
