South America, 2023

Cape Horn was identified by mariners and first rounded in 1616 by the Dutchman Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire, who named it Kaap Hoorn after the city of Hoorn in the Netherlands. For decades, Cape Horn was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. The waters around Cape Horn are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs.  We had superb weather for the rounding of “The Horn”.

This IS the Horn

Marilynn and I both got Certificates for Rounding the Horn!

What’s interesting here is that Chile owns “The Horn” and stations a Chilean military family here on this lonely rock.  It is considered an honor to be stationed here.   While actually closer to the South Pole than the lighthouse in Ushuaia, it is not known as the “end of the world Lighthouse.”
