Caerlaverock Battle Castle
The defender of southern Scotland. The tale is told that King Edward the first told his son after capturing Caerlaverock that when he died, his son should boil his bones down and when the last Scot was killed he should shake the bag and yell that the war was over. Edward attacked in 1300 AD with an English army of some 3000 men. The Scottish defenders (only around 75 men) held out for two days against repeated assaults, until Edward brought up huge trebuchet machines heaving rocks of 50 kgs and one hit the only well. Edward hanged many of the men and released a few to spread the word of his intentions. This website details this astonishing defense: <https://www.scotsmagazine.com/articles/siege-of-caerlaverock/>. It is by far the coolest castle we saw.
When I first saw Caerlaverock I remembered my reading of Ivanhoe!
A bird landing on the battle tower (floors are gone).
Marilynn in front of manor house.
Panorama (Marilynn left side on bank). I’m only ~40 feet from castle. No way to attack castle from sides or rear.
