Arrival in Rio we were  bussed to the hotel in downtown, unpacked, and met Jerry on the rooftop for refreshments and the “rules of the road” in Rio—take no valuables, no new digital cameras (they were new then), and no backpacks as the street gangs would jump you for any of these items.

The next day we began to travel around Rio de Janeiro.  Our first stop was a visit to the huge modern art cathedral.

Outside of the church.

The  vaulted ceiling.

Church is a  bastion of modern art.

Large square around church.

Next we visited the Corcovado on the highest hill of Rio de Janeiro.  Here the huge sculpture of Christ.

A cog train ride to the top.

Statue is huge as you can tell from the people below.

100,000 seat soccer stadium-now replaced.

The view of Rio from the Corcovado is something to see.

The view from the Corcovado is mesmerizing.

Marilynn took a wonderful shot of Quonnie and I while there.

What visit to Rio could  be without a trip by the exciting gondola car across the inner harbor to  The Sugarloaf.

OMG, he actually used duck tape!

Fernando, our local guide reassuring us!

Entering the terminal.

Boarding the gondola.

Large statue from the gondola.

Only reachable by boat on the shores of Sugarloaf.
