There are other plants at this altitude that are resilient.
The final stop and a wonderful surprise to us was The Canyonlands National Park. There are three separate parts of Canyonland: Island in the Sky (drivable ~7000 foot plateau, The Needles, and The Maze which are for only experienced hikers since these two parts are really remote with no roads at all.
