We were also only a couple of miles from seeing Hadrian’s Wall.  The wall is a World Heritage Site and was built to anchor the Roman territory in England.  Here is a really good and short description of the wall : <https://www.history.com/topics/ancient-rome/hadrians-wall>

Roman Bathroom: had heated water!

East and West sections of the wall running away from Housesteads to the next fort or tower.

More looks at the wall as it wound around hills and valleys.

Corbridge Roman Fort

The fort at Corbridge moved several times, and later became a warehousing site with a town growing inside the walls.  After the Romans left it was used for wall and building stones in the area.  The history is here:  <https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/corbridge-roman-town-hadrians-wall/>.

Buildings had air and water passages underneath to cool, dry, or heat the above areas.

The Roman Commander’s home.

All the buildings had sunken floors for heating and cooling with them being planked over with wood.  The last photo clearly shows how this construction worked.  Remarkable, really.
