Auckland Day One

We saw ships loaded like this in each port we were in.  Logging for China is a huge export for New Zealand and is currently on hold due to Covid 19.

Our first stop on the tour was at a Sheep Ranch. Photo of the kitchen area in the home of our hosts at the sheep ranch.  Very modern and open.

Herd of New Zealand deer kept by the sheep ranch.  These deer are raised for their venison as the market is strong for this.

Shearing.  Took about 3 min for a sheep to be shorn.

This is a herding sheepdog.  Highly trained.  Reacts to different whistles by owner.  They cost between 3 and 4 thousand NZ dollars each.

This is a “barking sheep dog”.  Used to drive them quickly into pens.  Cost about 2 thousand NZ dollars each.

The attachment of the herding dog to its owner is clear in this photo.  It would not leave his side and he is very gentle with it.  Clearly they are bonded.

that is another Gannet colony we were taken to see.  Since we already had seen one, I went to this beach which as it turned out is a huge surfing spot near Auckland.

There are surfers out there.  This place is called the Muriwai Park.

This fellow ran all the way downhill to the beach.  Once there he wasted no time in paddling out to find his wave.

While I went to the beach, Marilynn went to see this Gannet colony.  This was the first time we had gone different ways in the entire trip. Fact is, she came up with some really good photos of Gannets amid the rocks of this rookery.
